gé gēn is used for patterns with

wind-heat or wind-cold lodged in upper back and neck, stomach-heat, spleen qi/yang sinking, vents rashes.

stiff painful shoulder and neck, thirst, also from wasting and thirsting (diabetes), measles, diarrhea, dysentery, hypertension with headache, dizziness, tinnitus or paresthesia.

ge gen is very nice in pregnancy for women who suffer from heart burn, acidity. they can buy it at the organic food store. the root is used in the japanese kitchen to bind sauces. take a teaspoon of the root, disolve it in cold water and drink it. it will help to neutralize the reflux.
