cāng ér zǐ sǎn is used for patterns with

external wind-heat attacking the head, nose, and sinuses, wind-cold with interior heat in the muscles.

symptoms indicating the use of cāng ér zǐ sǎn

copious, purulent, foul-smelling nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, sneezing, dry nose, dizziness, frontal or temporal headache, fever, aversion to cold, muscle ache, blood-shot eyes, bitter taste, insomnia.

western interpretation of cāng ér zǐ sǎn

acute or chronic sinusitis, acute or chronic rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, rhinorrhea, headache.

explanation of the mechanism

this condition is known as profuse nasal discharge (bi yuan) and is caused by wind-heat attacking the head. the profuse, foul-smelling nasal discharge, yellow tongue coating, and rapid pulse reflect the presence of heat. the acute attack with copious discharge, frontal headache, dizziness, and floating pulse reflect the presence of wind.
