häufige fragen
what happens during an acupuncture session?
we begin by discussing your current symptoms, your health status, and what you hope to achieve with the treatment. after taking your medical history and performing a pulse and tongue diagnosis, the actual acupuncture treatment begins, during which you can lie back and relax for about 20 minutes.
does acupuncture hurt?
most people feel the insertion of the very fine needles only slightly or for just a moment. during the treatment, you may experience a slight pulling sensation, tingling, warmth, or a feeling of heaviness. in chinese medicine, we call this the “de-qi” sensation, which is interpreted as a sign that the flow of energy has been stimulated.
how long do the acupuncture needles stay in?
the needles usually remain in place for 20 to 30 minutes. during this time, you can relax and unwind; sometimes the treatment is supplemented with moxibustion or other tcm methods such as cupping or gua sha.
how does acupuncture work?
from a tcm perspective, needles are used to stimulate specific acupuncture points in order to regulate the flow of energy in the body. from a scientific perspective, there is evidence that acupuncture affects, among other things, the nervous system and the processing of pain.
how quickly does acupuncture work?
some people notice a change after the very first treatment, while others need several consecutive sessions before a noticeable effect becomes apparent.
what is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
in acupuncture, the needles are inserted according to the principles of traditional chinese medicine and tailored individually to the tcm diagnosis. in dry needling, they are used specifically to treat muscles and trigger points.
how many acupuncture sessions will i need?
there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, as it depends on the nature and duration of your symptoms and your individual response to treatment. for acute symptoms, a few sessions may sometimes be enough, while chronic symptoms usually require a longer course of treatment.
is acupuncture safe? are there any side effects?
when performed properly with sterile, disposable needles, acupuncture is considered a very safe treatment. occasionally, minor bruising, slight tenderness at the insertion site, fatigue, or brief, mild dizziness may occur.
do i have to believe in tcm for acupuncture to work?
no. you don’t have to believe in tcm or have a specific idea of how acupuncture works. what’s more important is that we work together to identify your symptoms and determine whether acupuncture might be beneficial for your personal situation.
