zhĭ sòu sǎn is used for patterns with

external wind-cold attacking the lungs, upper jiao dryness and phlegm.

symptoms indicating the use of zhĭ sòu sǎn

persistent cough with or without slight chills and fever, sputum that is difficult to expectorate, itchy, sore throat with phlegm, aversion to wind, aversion to cold, shortness of breath, excessive sputum, headache, asthma.

western interpretation of zhĭ sòu sǎn

upper respiratory tract infection, acute or chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, whooping cough (pertussis), early stages of viral and mycoplasmic pneumonia, any slightly moist, chronic cough, acute laryngitis, copd.

explanation of the mechanism

this is wind attacking the lungs, this presentation usually occurs as the sequela to an externally-contracted disease that has been treated, but in which the cough persists. in such cases, the pathogenic influence is said to be only 80-90% dispelled, which is reflected in the itchy throat and the slight chils and fever. the proper directional tendency of the lung qi is also disturbed, which is reflected in the coughing. the thin, white tongue coating and the moderate floating pulse indicate that the pathogenic influence has not penetrated deeply.
